What Coverage Can I Have With Medicare Supplements?

What Coverage Can I Have With Medicare Supplements?

Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap, take healthcare savings the extra mile by picking up where your coverage left off and then reducing the cost as much as the plan allows. Medigap gives you a lot to choose from, as there are varying levels of coverage.

What Costs Do Supplements Cover?

Medigap covers treatments or services that Medicare covers. But because its coverage is tied to Original Medicare, you can use your Medigap plan anywhere in the country.

Medigap can help save on the following:

  • Part A hospital coinsurance, plus all hospital costs for up to a year after Medicare benefits have been exhausted
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copay
  • First three pints of blood
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B coinsurance or copay
  • Part B excess charges
  • Part B deductible
  • 80% of costs for foreign travel emergencies

Only Medigap Plan F covers every category, but it is only available to those who turned 65 before January 1, 2020. This is because plans are no longer allowed to cover the Part B deductible. Likewise, Medigap Plan C is also restricted to those who turned 65 before January 1, 2020.

What Are The Different Plans?

Medigap has 10 Plans:

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • F
  • G
  • K
  • L
  • M
  • N

Medigap Plan A is the most basic, covering Part A and Part B coinsurance, the first three pints of blood, and Part A hospice coinsurance.

Plan B has the same coverage as Plan A, except it covers the Part A deductible, too.

Plans C, D, F, and G are the most extensive:

  • Plan C covers everything except for Part B excess charges
  • Plan D covers everything except for Part B excess charges and Part B deductible
  • Plan F covers everything
  • Plan G covers everything except for the Part B deductible

Plans K and L cover a large percentage of remaining costs instead of everything that is left over. For these costs, Plan K covers 50%, while Plan L covers 75%:

  • Part B coinsurance or copay
  • First three pints of blood
  • Part A hospice coinsurance or copay
  • Skilled nursing coinsurance
  • Part A deductible

Plans M and N offer similar coverage:

  • Plan M covers everything except for the Part B deductible and Part B excess charges.
  • Plan M covers 50% of the Part A deductible
  • Plan N covers everything that Plan M does, except it pays 100% of the Part A deductible
