Are you struggling to find affordable health insurance coverage but cannot qualify for federal aid? Or, has something happened in your life that has caused a significant change in your finances? Then you may qualify for ACA plans

Who Qualifies?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has made it possible for you to get affordable coverage. To be eligible, you must be a United States citizen who does not have any other form of health insurance coverage. You can’t have coverage from an employer, nor can you have coverage from your spouse’s employer.

Your income must be above the federal poverty level, but it cannot exceed the federal poverty level income by more than 400%. If your income meets these criteria, you can receive a tax credit which will reduce insurance-related costs such as copays, deductibles, and premiums.

What Is A Qualifying Event?

A qualifying event is one in which something has happened in your life that has put you in an adverse financial situation.

Qualifying events include:

  • Birth of a child or adopting a child
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Death of a child
  • Death of a spouse
  • Losing health insurance coverage
  • Getting out of jail
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen
  • Losing Medicaid or Medicare eligibility
  • Moving to a different part of the U.S.
  • Turning 26 and no longer being covered under parents’ health insurance

As you can see, qualifying isn’t just based on your current socioeconomic status. ACA plans allow you to take whatever life throws at you in stride. New financial hardships will not result in health insurance coverage being unavailable to you.

Going through an event like this allows you to join during Special Enrollment, in which you have 60 days to join an ACA plan. In 2021, new applicants can join until August 15.

What Do You Get When You Join?

If you qualify for an ACA plan, you’re qualifying for lower costs for:

  • Ambulatory services
  • Laboratory services
  • Hospitalizations
  • Pediatric care
  • Maternity care
  • Preventive treatment
  • Rehabilitative services
  • Family planning
  • Substance use disorder treatment

These services cover the needs for a broad spectrum of individuals from all walks of life, with a diverse set of medical needs.
